If I have piano lessons, will I need a piano on which to practice?
Yes, you’ll need a piano on which to practice in between lessons. Keyboards look similar to pianos but are actually very different. Keyboard keys have a smaller depth and they’re not weighted. For these reasons, practising piano on a keyboard can actually be detrimental to your technique. Also, keyboards usually have 61 keys whereas pianos have 88 keys. This can be very confusing for a beginner, and often, by grade 1, you will be playing pieces which have a range larger than 61 keys meaning that they will be unplayable on a keyboard. There are many bargains you can acquire on Facebook Marketplace. Some of my students have purchased fantastic, nearly new digital pianos with weighted keys from there and paid under £100! However, please avoid any acoustic piano listings which are ‘free’ of charge. Often these pianos are old with worn strings and cannot be tuned up to concert pitch (e.g. if you play a C on a flute, it matches the pitch of a C played on a piano). If you do decide to purchase a digital piano, ensure you purchase one with weighted keys. Acoustic pianos are built with weighted keys and manufacturers of digital pianos create the same effect for digital pianos. ‘Graded Hammer Action’ is also something you could look out for (although not essential) meaning that the higher keys are lighter to press than the lower keys, again reflecting the action on an acoustic piano.

Do you enter students for exams?
Yes, almost all of my students take piano exams. The vast majority of students take ABRSM exams with one student opting for Trinity London. One of my students also learns just for fun which is fine too! I appreciate exams are not for everyone. Students can take a face to face practical piano exam at an exam centre (in Liverpool or Chester) or can submit a digital recording for a performance exam. Digital recordings are made at Serenity Music Tuition and I can upload them for exam entry. Students must have a minimum attendance percentage of 80% to be eligible for exam entry and must demonstrate an excellent practice routine. Students who don’t practice or attend less than 80 of lessons will not be eligible for exam entry as I will be unable to cover everything they need to know in time, and there will be inconsistency in their learning. A lot of hard work, dedication and commitment is required to be ready for any exam, and piano exams are no different.
What do you have to do for a piano exam?
- Perform 3 pieces of music (each marked out of 30)
- Scales (marked out of 21)
- Sight reading (marked out of 21)
- Aural Tests (marked out of 18)

Are parents allowed to stay for lessons?
Of course! I have an open door policy and parents can choose to come and go as they wish. Some parents choose to stay for their child’s lesson and some parents think their child learns best without them there. Parents know their children best and making the decision to stay or go lies entirely with them.

I invoice for lessons attended at the end of each month. Lessons are paid for by bank transfer. I do not charge up front for lessons. You only pay for the lessons you attend.

A minimum of 8 hours’ notice is required to miss a lesson. If less notice is given, this is classed as a ‘late notice absence’ and is charged at the usual rate.
